Physical Mood Board

The ask: To create a physical board that encapsulates a specific vibe and/or mood.

The materials: Foam core board, masking tape, rubber cement, Exacto knife, ruler, cutting mat, and printed photos.

The Process

Inspiration: In order to start the beginning stages of my mood board, I had to decide on a general theme. I chose the “Cottagecore” trend as a starting point, sourcing images of a soft, dainty rural life. I sourced a collection of images using search phrases such as “Cottagecore”, “picnic”, and “flower fields”.

Building: After using an Exacto knife to cut out each image, I applied rubber cement to secure each image to the foam core board. I incorporated various “pop-up” images throughout my mood board, created by glueing images to smaller pieces of foam core board that would be glued on top of the existing board for a 3D effect. To finalize the board, I attached a 1/4” border of black masking tape.

Assembly: After printing out each potential image, it was time to assemble the physical mood board. After carefully cutting out each image with an Exacto knife, I experimented with various layouts and variations before deciding upon each image’s location on my board.
